The Crime Desk: Today is January 24, the day of the historic popular uprising. On this day in 1969, the struggling masses defied the repression of the ruling group and marched to overthrow the Pakistani military regime. Matiur Rahman, a ninth grade student at Navkumar Institution, was killed in a police firing during the procession. In the tide of people’s anger and popular uprising, the dictatorial Ayub government was forced to release everyone, including Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the main accused in the Agartala conspiracy case. Ayub’s dictatorship fell. The popular upheaval of the 1970s still inspires the people of the country in their struggle against misrule and exploitation.

On the occasion of celebrating the day, President Md. Sahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages. In his speech, the President said, “It is a historic day in the history of Bangladesh’s independence movement and democratic progress.”

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said in her speech, “The popular uprising of 1970 is a significant chapter in the history of Bangladesh. We have achieved great freedom through the armed liberation war following the 6-point, later 11-point, and mass upheavals of the 1970s.
