Chittagong businessman was fined 100 million taka for life

Nagar Reporter: The court sentenced a businessman to life imprisonment in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission for embezzling about Tk 92 crore in the name of importing scrap ships. In the same verdict, the court also fined him 100 crore rupees. Apart from this, it also ordered five years of imprisonment and a fine of Tk 10 lakh under separate clauses.

ACC PP Kazi Chanwar Ahmed Lovelu told reporters that Chittagong Divisional Special Judge Munshi Abdul Majeed gave the verdict yesterday. He said that convict Mojibur Rahman Milon is the owner of Muhib Steel and Ship Recycling Industry, a shipbreaking factory. His home is in the Feni district. House in Halisahar city. Mujibur is now absconding.

According to court sources, a loan of Tk 45 crore was granted in the name of Mojibur Rahman Milon from Agrani Bank’s Laldighi Par branch on December 31, 2009, for the import of scrap ships. On April 26, 2010, the loan limit was increased to Tk 89 crore. On May 7 of that year, Mojibur opened a loan of Tk 40 crore. Mojibur imported a scrap vessel of 12,433 MT from Korea, which was discharged from Chittagong Port on September 25, 2011. The bank authorities paid a net debt of 82 crore, 89 lakh, 12 thousand, and 44 taka in three installments, including 48 crore, 56 lakh, 44 thousand, and 514 taka as the price of that ship to Mojibur’s organization.

It is alleged in the case that after paying some amount, until May 30, 2017, the amount due to the bank from Mujibur stood at 91 crore, 92 lakh, 84 thousand, and 392 taka. Mojibur went missing without paying the money, and even his family members hounded him.

After the complaint of the bank authorities in this regard, the assistant director of the ACC head office, Zafar Ahmed, filed a case at the city’s Kotwali police station on May 24, 2018 as a plaintiff. After the investigation, the assistant director of the ACC, Fakhrul Islam, filed the charge sheet in court on September 14, 2021.

The court has issued an arrest warrant against the fugitive Mojibur Rahman Milon, the ACC PP said.
