Rangpur Correspondent: In Rangpur, the police arrested three people, including the director of the hospital, on the charge of selling a newborn baby because he could not pay the bill. The incident took place at Holy Crescent Hospital in the city on Wednesday morning (January 17).

Deputy Commissioner of Police Abu Maruf Hossain gave this information at the Rangpur Metropolitan Police Intelligence Branch office on Sunday (January 21) afternoon.

The arrested are MS Rahman Roni (58), director of Holy Crescent Hospital and son of deceased Nazir Uddin Sarkar of Kamarpara area of the city; Rubel Hossain Ratan (30), son of Samsul Islam of Central Peerzabad area, buyer of the newborn; and Zerina Akhter Bithi (30), Rubel’s wife.

According to the police, on January 13, Labani Akhtar of the Burarghat area of the city was admitted to the Holy Crescent Hospital by her former acquaintance, MS Rahman Roni, with labor pains. That night, she gave birth to a boy in the hospital. Failure to pay the bill at the time of clearance from the clinic later leads to the temptation to sell the newborn.

When Labani Akhter did not agree, clinic director MS Rahman Roni enticed Wasim Akram, the father of the newborn. Later, Roni sold the newborn to his former acquaintances Zerina Akhter Bithi and Rubel Hossain Ratan for 40 thousand taka.

Abu Maruf Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, said that based on the complaint of Labni Akhtar, the mother of the newborn, the newborn was rescued from the Peerzabad area of the city, and three people involved were arrested.
