Dhaka Bureau: The Election Commission (EC) is on a hardline in the case of code of conduct violations in the last minute of the 12th National Parliament elections. The Election Commission (EC) has canceled the candidacy of independent candidate Habibur Rahman Pawan from Laxmipur-1 constituency for allegedly threatening the DC-SP just four days before the election. This decision was informed by the Election Commission on Tuesday. For the first time, the commission canceled the candidacy of a candidate for violating the election code of conduct.

However, this presidium member of the Jubo League has announced to go to the high court against the EC’s decision. Current MP Anwar Khan is voting as an Awami League candidate in this constituency. Also, the candidacy of independent candidates Khandkar and Amin for the Noakhali-1 seat has been canceled due to dual citizenship (United States). His candidature was canceled subject to inquiry on the orders of the High Court.

On the other hand, the Election Commissioner said again that Bangladesh will be isolated from the whole world if free, fair, and acceptable elections are not held. Anishur Rahman. He said our purpose is the same. That is, to organize free, fair, and impartial elections. If we cannot have free, fair, and acceptable elections, if we fail for any reason, then our state itself will be a failed state. We will be cut off from the whole world. He made this comment while speaking as the chief guest at the training program for executive magistrates at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center in the capital on Tuesday. Earlier, this commissioner made similar comments on the training program of executive magistrates last Sunday.

The Election Inquiry Committee has issued at least 490 notices to various political parties, independent candidates, and their supporters since yesterday for violating the code of conduct. Complaints, summonses, fines, and lawsuits were filed against many. Among them are important leaders of the ruling Awami League and the Jatiya Party-Japa.

Regarding the decision to cancel Pawan’s candidature, the letter signed by EC Deputy Secretary Abdus Salam said that independent candidate Mohammad Habibur Rahman Pawan called the Deputy Commissioner, Lakshmipur, and the concerned Returning Officer and made unspeakable, offensive, and indecent statements. The returning officer and superintendent of police were intimidated and threatened to take various measures, including a transfer, within three days. In view of this, he appeared in person at the Election Commission Secretariat and gave an explanation to the Election Commission regarding taking legal action against that candidate. Besides, the Election Commission directed the District Election Officer, Lakshmipur, to investigate the matter of the allegations made by the District Commissioner, Lakshmipur, and the concerned Returning Officer. Besides, the Election Inquiry Committee has sent the candidate to the Election Commission with a recommendation to take legal action against him for violating the election code of conduct and committing ‘pre-election irregularities’ by being involved in election crimes. Then the candidate was summoned to the Election Commission. During the hearing, the candidate’s statement, the investigation report sent by the District Election Officer, Lakshmipur, the election inquiry report, and the review of the relevant laws and regulations proved the fact that the candidate had committed ‘pre-election irregularities’ including election offenses, and the commission canceled his candidature.

After canceling his candidature, Habibur Rahman Pawan announced that he would fight for the people of Ramganj till the end, stating that he was innocent and a victim of oppression. He instructed his supporters to stop campaigning until further orders. Pawan also announced that he would go to the High Court regarding the cancellation of his candidature.
