President Md. Sahabuddin’s 73rd birthday

In the seventies, he moved from the streets to the streets for freedom. He was always vocal about the rights of students and youth. Journalism, teaching, legal profession, judge, commissioner of ACC, and finally, he became a member of the Central Advisory Council of the Bangladesh Awami League, chairman of the publicity and publication sub-committee, and the last member of the election commission formed to elect the president of the Awami League in the council. He is a lifetime member of the traditional Pabna Press Club.

Md. Sahabuddin was born on December 10, 1949, in the Jubilee Tank neighborhood in Shivrampur, Pabna city. His father is Sharfuddin Ansari, and his mother is Khairunnessa. He obtained his SSC from Radhanagar Majumdar Academy in 1966, his HSC from Pabna Edward College in 1968, and his BSc in 1971 (conducted in 1972). Later, he received his master’s degree in psychology from Rajshahi University in 1974. In 1975, he obtained his LLB degree from Pabna Shaheed Aminuddin Law College and was the only one among 103 candidates to pass the Upper Second Class.

After joining politics during his student life, he served as General Secretary of the Pabna Edward College Branch Chhatra League in 1967–68, Vice President of the Undivided Pabna District Chhatra League in 1969–70, and President of the Greater Pabna District Chhatra League in 1970–73. On March 23, 1971, Pabna Town Hall Maidan was among those raising the flag of Bangladesh. Sahabuddin was one of them. He served as the convener of the Pabna District Swadhin Bangla Chhatra Sangam Parishad. Md. Sahabuddin actively participated in the Great War of Liberation in 1971 as a member of Mujib’s army. He served as the President of the Pabna District Jubo League in 1974. In 1975, when the Bangladesh Farmer-Labor Awami League (Bakshal) was formed, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman nominated him as the joint secretary of Pabna District Bakshal. On August 15, 1975, in protest of the brutal murder of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sahabuddin resisted in Pabna and led the march. He was later arrested on August 20 and tortured in an army camp for three months. He was later sent to prison and was released in 1978 after serving three years.

At that time, he worked as the Pabna District Correspondent of the Daily Bangla Bani Patrika and became a member of the Pabna Press Club. He was elected Publicity Secretary of the Pabna District Awami League in 1980. Md. Sahabuddin was a member of the Pabna District Bar Association. He taught at Shaheed Bulbul College for some time. He joined the Bangladesh Civil Service (Judicial) Cadre in 1982. He was elected Secretary General of the Bangladesh Judicial Service Association in 1995–1996. He stood first in both the in-service additional district judge and district judge training workshop evaluations. He also served as the Chairman of the Labor Court. He was appointed by the Law Ministry as a coordinator in the Bangabandhu assassination case.

Md. Sahabuddin retired as a District and Sessions Judge in 2006 and returned to the legal profession in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. After the general election in 2001, during the BNP-Jamaat coalition government, he was the chairman of the commission of inquiry formed later into the attacks, murders, rapes, and looting of the Awami League and its affiliates and the people of the minority communities. Which is known as the ‘Sahabuddin Commission’. The report of this commission is published in the official gazette. Md. Sahabuddin served as the Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) from 2011 to 2016. At this time, the World Bank raised allegations of corruption in the Padma Bridge construction project. When the government gave the task of investigating the matter to the ACC, Md. Sahabuddin played a brave and determined role and managed to disprove the allegations of the World Bank. The Ontario Court of Justice of Toronto, Canada, fully supported his investigation report while settling the related case.

Md. Sahabuddin was elected as a member of the Bangladesh Awami League Advisory Council in January 2020. He also served as the Chairman of the Publicity and Publication Sub-Committee of the Awami League. Sahabuddin served as president of the Pabna Development Foundation. After independence, he was the General Secretary of the Pabna District Red Crescent Society from 1972–1974, and the Treasurer of the Pabna District Family Planning Society from 1973–1974. He is a life member of the Pabna Press Club, the Annada Govinda Public Library, and the Banmali Shilpakala Kendra. Md. Sahabuddin’s wife, Dr. Rebecca Sultana, retired in 2009 as Joint Secretary to the Government. He is currently working as a professor and director of a private university. Md. Arshad Adnan is their only child. His two twin grandsons, Tahsin, Adnan, and Tahmid, Adnan is studying A-levels. Traveling, reading books, and listening to music. Sahabuddin’s favorite hobby.
  
On February 13 of this year, the 22nd president of the country was elected. Sahabuddin and took the oath on April 24. On his 73rd birthday, a cake-cutting and discussion meeting was organized at the Pabna Press Club.
