The Crime Desk: Today, December 9, is Begum Rokeya Day. This day is celebrated every year as a source of endless motivation for women’s empowerment and education, socio-economic development, the contribution of Begum Rokeya in establishing a society based on rights and equality, and the progress of women’s awakening. On the occasion of the day, various institutions and organizations across the country, including the capital Dhaka, have undertaken extensive programs.
President Md. Sahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the occasion of this day. Various programs have been taken up by the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs on the occasion of Begum Rokeya Day and Begum Rokeya Padak 2023 tomorrow. The Begum Rokeya Medal is being awarded to five prominent women this year for their important contribution and glorious role in various fields, including encouraging women’s awakening.
The five distinguished women who received the medal and their areas of contribution are: Khaleda Ekram, the first woman vice chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, posthumously (Dhaka district), Dr. Halida Hanum Akhtar (Rangpur district) for establishing women’s rights, Kamrunnesha Ashraf Dina for women’s socio-economic development, posthumously (Netrakona district), Nishat Majumdar (Lakshipur district) for women’s empowerment, and Ranita Bala (Thakurgaon district) for rural development.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will present the medal as the chief guest at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital today. On the occasion of Begum Rokeya Day, the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs will publish special circulars and memorabilia in newspapers. Various media, including Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar, will broadcast and publish special programs and articles on this occasion. Banners, festoons, and posters will be distributed and installed to promote women’s education, women’s rights, and increase awareness.
