The Crime Desk: Today (December 2) marks the 26th anniversary of the signing of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Treaty. On December 2, 1997, the then Chief Whip Abul Hasnat Abdullah and Jyotirindra Bodhipriya Larma, alias Santu Larma, president of the Chittagong Jana Sanhati Samiti, signed the Hill Peace Accord on behalf of the government. The peacekeeping forces’ long struggle of almost two decades ended as a result of this agreement.

The armed, agitating members of the Shanti Bahini returned to normal life through the Hill Peace Accords. Initially, they surrendered their arms to the government and returned to a normal life. Meanwhile, the government announced amnesty for them.

In the speech given on the occasion of the day, President Md. Sahabuddin said that the Mountain Peace Agreement will be an example to be followed around the world in the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Agreement has ended the long-standing ethnic conflicts in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. A trend of peace and development has been established in the backward and underdeveloped hill regions. The Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Agreement is a rare event in world history.
