Dhaka Bureau: The Election Commission (EC) has said that party Members of Parliament (MPs) do not have to resign as MPs to be elected as independent candidates. On Wednesday (November 29), the Election Commission Director (Public Relations) said Shariful Alam informed me of this information.

He said that news has been published in various media that any member of parliament has to resign from the post of member of parliament if he wants to be elected independently or as an independent candidate. However, as per the Representation of the People Order, 1972, certain conditions have to be fulfilled to be elected as an independent candidate.

A signed list containing the support of 1 percent of the voters in the respective constituencies must be attached to the nomination paper. However, if an independent candidate has previously been elected as a member of the National Assembly, this list will not be required. Be it party, non-party, or reserved women’s seats, she can be a candidate for the position of parliament member.
