Entertainment Desk: Bollywood’s renowned choreographer and dance director, Saroj Khan, passed away on July 3, 2020. He was born in the city of Bombay, the capital of the state of Maharashtra. After his death, the entire film world fell into mourning. For more than 40 years, he contributed so much to the Indian film industry, which will never be forgotten. Due to his immense contribution to Bollywood, director Hansal Mehta and producer Bhushan Kumar also wanted to make a biopic on him. Madhuri Dixit will also reportedly be seen playing his character.
But, unknown to many, Saroj Khan was born into a Hindu family. And later, he embraced Islam, thinking of love and his children. He was born on November 22, 1948, in a Hindu family in Bombay. Her name was Nirmala Nagpal. Saroj Khan’s parents changed her name from Nirmala to Saroj before she started working in the film industry. They didn’t want the rest of the family to know that their daughter works in films. At just 13, Saroj Khan married dance guru B. Sohanlal. He was 43 years old at the time. The choreographer gave birth to their first child at the age of 14. Saroj learns after the birth of his first child that Sohanlal is married and the father of four children.
In an interview, Saroj Khan spoke about his breakup with Sohanlal. In 1965, I gave birth to my second child. A daughter died within eight months of birth. At that time, Sohanlal and I parted ways. because he refused to identify my children. In late 1969, he contacted me again to become his assistant. Once he had a heart attack, I also visited him. And I spent the night by his side. Then he disappeared from my life forever and settled permanently in Madras.
Later, she developed an affair with businessman Sardar Roshan Khan and married him. At that time, he converted to Islam to get married. Talking about the second marriage, the choreographer said, ‘I got into a relationship with a Pathan businessman named Sardar Roshan Khan. He also had a family. But his love for me was enough. He was also willing to accept my children as his own. So I married him in 1975.’
It is to be noted that in the 1980s, he became a well-known name in Bollywood after starting to work with Bollywood stars like Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit. Both Sridevi and Madhuri have worked as dancers on some of the most popular songs in Hindi cinema. He gained immense fame by choreographing the songs ‘Dola Re Dola’ of the movie Devdas and ‘Ek, Do, Tin’ of the movie Tejab. He also won the National Film Award three times for best choreography.
